Skimm for February 2nd

Skimm'd with pizza and beer.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"It was a cat-and-mouse fight, it always is with us" -- Novak Djokovic after beating Andy Murray to win his fifth Australian Open. Meanwhile, Serena got past Maria Sharapova to take the women's title.

SUPA, SUPA FLY

THE STORY

The New England Patriots beat the Seattle Seahawks to win the Super Bowl 28-24. It was not boring.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The Patriots were up. Then the Seahawks were up. Then the Patriots were up. And they stayed up, thanks to a final touchdown by wide receiver Julian Edelman. There was this crazy catch. Then, there was this crazy interception, which saved the game for the Patriots. Three-time Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady can keep his day job.

ANYTHING ELSE?

For a while there, Seahawks QB Russell Wilson had a hard time completing a pass. Meanwhile, Brady threw enough touchdown passes to break a Super Bowl record. There was a brief period when the NFL became the WWE. Emotions were running high. Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick took a Gatorade bath, and may have even cracked a smile doing it.

TELL ME ABOUT ADBOWL..

Some ads gave us the Sunday Scaries (looking at you, Nationwide). Budweiser has learned that the puppy always wins. Marcia Brady isn't nice when she's hungry. If you're craving a Big Mac, you might be able to pay in hugs. Avocados from Mexico are funny. Fiat did a commercial for Viagra. Walter White is alive, and he's sort of a pharmacist. Cruise ships are patriotic. We're listing Liam Neeson as our emergency contact. And yeah, we throw like girls.

WHAT ABOUT THE HALF-TIME SHOW?

Katy Perry channelled Will Ferrell in "Blades of Glory" while riding a giant lion slash Transformer. Turns out, both she and Lenny Kravitz have kissed a girl and liked it. Missy Elliott surprised us by putting her thing down, flipping it, etc. Snoop Dogg may or may not have been dressed as a shark. If you bet on Katy's cleavage, you probably lost.

theSKIMM

There are questions for Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll after he called a pass on the Seahawks last play – it was intercepted -- instead of handing it off to the player nicknamed "Beast Mode" aka Marshawn Lynch, one of the best running backs in the League. It was an exciting game between two top teams, but in football as in life, Tom Brady won.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT PEOPLE ARE HORRIFIED BY…

ISIS apparently beheaded a Japanese hostage. Again. Yesterday, the group released a video that appears to show the beheading of Japanese journalist Kenji Goto, just days after ISIS released a video that seemed to show the beheading of another Japanese hostage. ISIS had been holding the two along with a Jordanian pilot. Jordan has offered a prisoner swap in exchange for the pilot's release. But first, the country would like to see some proof that he's still alive.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU FEEL COOPED UP…

Not as much as Peter Greste. Yesterday, the Al Jazeera reporter was released from an Egyptian prison after being locked up for more than a year. He and two Egyptian colleagues were arrested in 2013. They'd been covering the Egyptian military's crackdown on protests that followed the overthrow of former President Mohammed Morsi. Egypt's military said the journalists conspired to report false news that would undermine the new government. The journalists said 'no way,' they were just doing their jobs. They were convicted despite a total lack of evidence against them, and the case has been a giant political headache for Egypt ever since. Since its 2011 revolution, foreign governments and human rights groups have had a watchful eye on Egypt for its human rights violations -- especially its treatment of journalists. Greste's two colleagues (and several other reporters arrested in the crackdown) are still behind bars.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE WORRIED ABOUT...

Whitney Houston's daughter. On Saturday, 21-year-old Bobbi Kristina Brown was found unresponsive in a bathtub at her Atlanta-area home. She was rushed to the hospital and put into a medically induced coma. She's reportedly in bad shape. Brown is the only daughter of Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston, who died almost three years ago after a long battle with drug abuse. Houston was also found in a bathtub.

WHAT TO SAY IF YOU DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE SUPER BOWL THIS MORNING

So, Bruce Jenner. Over the weekend, People Magazine reported that Bruce will soon announce plans to transition into a woman. Before he was flying toy helicopters around the Kardashian home, Jenner was the gold-medal-winning decathlete on the front of every Wheaties box in the 70s. For weeks, there have been reports that he's been making the transition, and, naturally, is filming a docu-series that will air later this year. The whole Kardashian krew is reportedly supportive.
