GUEST SKIMM:
First Lady Michelle Obama

FLOTUS is rolling out a new initiative to help girls around the world. She Skimm'd it for us.

WHAT IS 'LET GIRLS LEARN'?

A new US government initiative to help adolescent girls worldwide go to school and stay in school. Through Let Girls Learn, Peace Corps Volunteers will be working on community-based girls’ education projects across the globe – from girls’ leadership camps to girls’ mentoring programs.

REMIND ME...WHAT EXACTLY IS THE PEACE CORPS?

Peace Corps: US Government program through which American volunteers spend about two years living and working in developing countries on issues like health care, education, agriculture and infrastructure.

WHY DO YOU CARE ABOUT THIS INITIATIVE SO MUCH?

So many girls have the spark of something extraordinary inside them, but that spark is snuffed out because of the norms of their communities or the circumstances of their birth. That is unbearable to me. In so many ways, I see myself in these girls. They are just as smart, curious and ambitious as I was growing up, but I got to go to school, and they don’t, and it could easily have been the other way around.

WHAT’S THIS TRIP YOU’RE TAKING?

I’ll be traveling to Japan where I will be joining the wife of Japan’s Prime Minister, Mrs. Akie Abe, to announce a new partnership between the US and Japan to educate girls worldwide. We’ll be calling on other countries across the globe to join in this effort. I’ll then go to Cambodia where I’ll meet with Peace Corps volunteers working on girls’ education and visit a school that is transforming girls’ lives.

GIVE US A SUBJECT LINE FOR TOMORROW.

WE NEED A NEW SKIMM READS SUGGESTION. WHAT'S ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND?

I just finished The Light of the World by Elizabeth Alexander. It’s a memoir about coping with the death of her husband, and it’s magnificent.
