  QUOTE OF THE DAY

"Turned their backs on everything I once held dear" – Malcolm Gladwell on McDonald's decision to stop cooking french fries in beef fat. That happened decades ago. This beef goes way back.

CHARLOTTESVILLE

The Story

Over the weekend, the Justice Department opened a civil rights investigation into racially-charged violence at a rally in Charlottesville, VA.

What happened?

On Saturday, white nationalists met for a scheduled protest in Charlottesville against the city's plans to remove a statue of Confederate General Robert E Lee. The protesters were carrying torches and waving Nazi and Confederate flags, while chanting neo-Nazi, racist, and anti-Semitic slogans. Violent clashes with counterprotesters led VA Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) to declare a state of emergency and call in the National Guard. Later that day, a car rammed into a crowd of counterprotesters, killing one woman and injuring more than a dozen others. The alleged driver has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Two police officers later died in a helicopter crash while helping clear the streets.

What did President Trump say?

He condemned the "hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides."

What are other people saying?

Leaders from both sides of the aisle said Trump's criticism of "many sides" was vague and weak. They called for him to condemn white supremacism by name. Many lawmakers – including Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO) and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) – called this incident an act of domestic terrorism, and said Trump should do the same. Meanwhile, former KKK leader David Duke had this to say to Trump: "remember it was White Americans who put you in the presidency, not radical leftists." Duke has long endorsed Trump, and it took Trump a while to publicly distance himself.

Has Trump responded?

Yesterday, the White House clarified Trump's statement to say he condemns "all forms" of violence and hatred, and "of course that includes white supremacists, KKK neo-Nazi and all extremist groups."

Last week brought two big tests for Trump to bring the country together – North Korea's threats towards the US, and now this. Many people think he didn't step up to the task at either moment.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What to say when you hear an American woman won the steeplechase for the first time...

Golfer Justin Thomas pulled off a first too. Yesterday, he scored his first major title by kicking putt at the PGA Championship. At the start of the competition all eyes were on Jordan Spieth, who was chasing a career grand slam. Never mind.

What people are talking about…

India. Over the weekend, the head of a state-run hospital there was suspended after more than 60 children died under his watch in the last few days. It's unclear why so many children died so suddenly. But the hospital allegedly had a shortage of key supplies, including liquid oxygen. The hospital chief says he asked the Indian gov for money to buy supplies but was ignored. Others say the deaths were connected to a mosquito-borne disease that's common during India's rainy season. The Indian gov is investigating what exactly went down.

What to say when your married friends start arguing at dinner…

This is awkward. Uber and one of its main investors have been fighting too. Last week, a venture capital firm sued Uber co-founder and former CEO Travis Kalanick for things like fraud and "gross mismanagement." ICYMI Uber's hit a lot of speed bumps this year with Kalanick behind the wheel. See: sexual harassment and discrimination claims, a legal battle with Alphabet's Waymo, and a Justice Department criminal investigation. That's why Kalanick is the former CEO. But he still has voting rights for who gets a seat on the company's board. Now, this investor says that Kalanick deliberately hid all the shady business going on in order to get them. And that they want him off the board. Then yesterday, the rest of Uber's board said they're "disappointed" with the infighting and told this investor 'how about you give up your seat instead.' The investor is a major player in Silicon Valley, so a lot of other tech companies are a little nervous about working with it now. Stepping on the drama gas.

What to say to your friend who works at a non-profit…

Heard about this? Over the weekend, three NGOs – including Doctors Without Borders and Save the Children – said they're hitting pause on search and rescue efforts off the coast of Libya after allegedly receiving threats from Libyan authorities. In recent years, things like war and poverty in Africa and the Middle East have forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes for places like Europe. Many of them travel through Libya. Smugglers have started cashing in on this by charging huge sums of money to ferry these migrants and refugees over to Europe. They typically cram too many people into small boats that often capsize. For years, NGOs have been part of rescue operations in the Mediterranean to pick up migrants that need help. But now, some NGOs say that Libyan authorities told them they're not welcome in the country's waters, forcing them and others to temporarily stop working in the area. Now the fear is more migrants will die at sea or be forced back to Libya, where they could be thrown in jail or tortured.
