Skimm'd while learning some Excel shortcuts

  QUOTE OF THE DAY

"He disrespected the Wu-Tang Clan" – A potential juror in Martin 'Pharma Bro' Shkreli's trial. Needless to say, this person was not chosen.

FALLING OUT

The Story

Yesterday, President Trump broke up with all the CEOs on his business councils.

The What

Last weekend, white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups protested the planned removal of a Confederate statue in Charlottesville, VA. Violence broke out between them and counter-protesters. A driver rammed his car into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer and injuring many others. President Trump weighed in three separate times, ultimately concluding that "both sides" are to blame. To which pretty much everyone said, 'you can't put hate groups in the same bucket as those standing up to racism.'

Where are we now?

Earlier this week, a handful of CEOs advising the president resigned from White House business councils. The rest came under serious pressure to distance themselves too. Yesterday, those CEOs – including names like JPMorgan Chase's Jamie Dimon and PepsiCo's Indra Nooyi – decided to jump ship together, saying "intolerance, racism, and violence" are not what they and America stand for. But before they could go public about it, Trump shut down the councils himself.

What else is going on?

In recent days, Baltimore and LA quickly removed Confederate statues and monuments. Other cities are considering doing the same. Meanwhile, Internet companies – like domain providers and social media – are taking steps to cut off white supremacist groups.

During the presidential campaign, Trump positioned himself as a business-friendly politician. Now, many corporate leaders are deciding it's not good business to associate with him.

Let's talk this out. Yesterday, the US, Mexico, and Canada kicked off NAFTA renegotiations in DC. NAFTA: North American Free Trade Agreement. The one signed back in the '90s to open up trade between the three countries. It gets rid of most taxes on imports and makes it easier for companies to do biz across borders. President Trump isn't a fan, because he says the deal is responsible for the US losing jobs to Mexico, and has promised to overhaul it. Earlier this year, his administration gave Congress a formal heads up that it planned to renegotiate the deal. Now, we're here. Trump's priority no. 1 is to narrow the US trade deficits with Mexico and Canada. Basically, the US buys far more goods from Mexico and Canada than they buy from the US. So Trump's saying 'well that's not really fair.' Part of his proposed change is to require car manufacturers in NAFTA countries to use more US-made parts. And push Canada and Mexico to buy more US goods, like dairy products. But Canada and Mexico say NAFTA doesn't need a redo, just a few tweaks to bring it into the 21st Century (think: digital trade and the environment). Meanwhile, business leaders say the deal has made the American economy more competitive, and that editing it could end up raising prices and hurting US jobs. So there's a lot of negotiating that nafta be done.

What to say when you hear HBO accidentally leaked the next episode of GOT

Take note, Apple. The company is reportedly planning to shell out around $1 billion in the next year on original content. Because it apparently just caught on that streaming is in. And now it wants to Netflix and chill with the cool kids. This summer, Apple dipped its toes in the streaming pool and launched a couple of its own shows ("Planet of the Apps", "Carpool Karaoke"), but viewers were not impressed. Now, Apple's hoping the cash will lure Hollywood producers to help it up its game. It'll reportedly use this money to acquire and produce its own shows to compete with Jon Snow and friends. Even though $1 billion sounds like a lot, it's only a small bite of what companies like HBO and Netflix spend on their programming. But The Fruit's hoping an apple a day will keep everyone pressing play.

What to say when you've been trying to read the same book all summer...

Just not that into this. Earlier this week, the Texas legislature let a 'bathroom bill' fail for the second time this year. The kind that would've required transgender people to use public bathrooms based on the sex on their birth certificate. In recent years, some states (see: North Carolina) have become very concerned with where people pee. Supporters say bills like the one Texas was considering are in the interest of public safety and protect women and children. Critics – including LGBTQ groups – say 'discrimination much?' Earlier this year, the Texas bill fizzled because not enough lawmakers were on board. It was apparently so important though that it's a big reason the governor called a special summer session to get the legislature to pass it. But that didn't help push it over the edge.
