Skimm'd while looking through the Skimm HQ library

  QUOTE OF THE DAY

"Can't catch me hahaha" – A man commenting on his own Wanted poster on Facebook.

NOT A GOOGLE LOOK

The Story

Google's office culture is making headlines again.

What are you talking about?

Yesterday, three former female employees filed a class action lawsuit against Google. It alleges that the company pays women less than men for similar work. Says equally qualified women are placed into lower level jobs. And claims women are less likely to get promoted, even if they have great performance reviews. Google's saying 'erroneous, erroneous on all counts.'

Why does this sound familiar?

Because the US Labor Department has been looking into this for a while. And because of that time a male former Google engineer argued there are fewer women in tech due to "biological differences."

Silicon Valley is known for creating some of the world's most innovative and profitable companies. It's also known for not playing fair with women and minorities. And that's a problem.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What people are watching...

London. This morning, a reported explosion on a London Underground train injured several people. Police have declared it a terrorist incident. It happened at the Parsons Green station in southwest London during rush hour, leading to panic and a stampede at the station.

What to say when you have bad cell reception...

Say that again? The feds are still trying to figure out why a bunch of US diplomats in Cuba lost their hearing in the past year. Last month, it came out that at least 10 State Dept employees suffered from sonic attacks while working in Havana. Yes, sonic attacks. That's when the James Bonds of the world use high-pitched sound to cause some serious damage. The State Dept says the attacks started late last year and happened over several months, leading to everything from nausea to hearing loss. Now, some diplomats reportedly have even more serious health problems, like concussions, which aren't usually linked to sound. So officials are still scratching their heads over what's causing all this. In other shady news, Saudi Arabia's incoming king – the one who took his cousin's place on the throne by holding him hostage in a palace – has allegedly spent the last week locking up his critics. Crowning achievement.

What to say to your friend who's always pushing single-origin beans…

Talk to Nestlé. The food company is spending more than $400 million on a majority stake in Blue Bottle Coffee. That's the coffee brand your friend in SF drinks every morning. High-end coffee – think: cold brew, flat whites, nitro – is having a moment. Everyone from Stumptown to Intelligentsia has been snatched up in recent years. Now Nestlé – which owns Nescafé and Nespresso – wants to take a sip. The deal means it gets to brew more coffee sales. And Blue Bottle gets to open more shops. Blue is the new black coffee.

What people are talking about…

New Hampshire. Police there have opened a hate crime investigation after an attack on an eight-year-old biracial boy. Last month, the boy was playing outside when a group of teenagers allegedly started harassing him. The boy's family says the teens wrapped a tire swing rope around his neck and pushed him off a picnic table, leaving him dangling. He broke loose and is expected to be OK. His family says this was an attempted lynching. Now, the police are looking into it.

What to say when you finish a presentation…

Take a bow. Cassini's doing the same. Today, the NASA spacecraft that's been hanging out around Saturn for over a decade will end its 20-year mission…by diving into the planet. Cassini's been phoning home with data on things like Saturn's rings and moons. Now, it's running out of gas and waving goodbye.

What to say to your friend going through a breakup...

Big girls don't cry. Fergie and Josh Duhamel called it quits too.

What to say when you hear North Korea launched another missile...

Here's your Skimm on it.
