Skimm'd while practicing our serve

  QUOTE OF THE DAY

"I apologize" – Uber's new CEO to London, after the company was dropped from the city over security concerns. 'Uber' and 'apology' – two words no one expected to see in the same sentence.

THAT ESCALATED

The Story

North Korea and the US are arguing over whether President Trump just declared war.

Catch me up.

The international community has long been stuck in a bad pattern with North Korea. The North makes threats, and aggressively tests weapons. The international community condemns this, and issues new sanctions. This year it's gotten worse, with the North stepping up the weapons testing – and the White House stepping up the rhetoric.

How so?

Well, last week at the UN, Trump said the US would "totally destroy" North Korea if forced to defend itself or its allies. He's also been referring to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as "Rocket Man." This reportedly goes against the advice of his advisers. Kim says Trump will "pay dearly" for his words.

Where are we now?

Over the weekend, Trump tweeted that Kim may not "be around much longer." And the US sent warplanes near North Korea as a show of force. North Korea says all of this is a "declaration of war." The White House says 'not so.' The North has used this kind of language in the past when things have been especially tense.

There are fears that if these two unpredictable leaders continue like this, the conflict is less and less likely to end at the negotiating table.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What to say when the NFL is all over your social feed…

Still a thing. Last night, the Dallas Cowboys and the Arizona Cardinals joined the debate over protesting during the national anthem. President Trump spent the last few days saying that athletes who don't stand for the anthem are disrespecting the flag and should be fired. Dozens of NFL player responded in some way during games Sunday. And it looks like they're not done. Last night, the Cardinals stood and linked arms during the anthem. And the Cowboys took a knee beforehand – including owner Jerry Jones, who is a Trump supporter and one of the biggest names in the league. Jones called it a moment of unity.

What to say when you haven't been paying attention…

What's the score? Yesterday, the Congressional Budget Office – a nonpartisan group of number crunchers – scored the Senate GOP's latest plan to repeal and replace Obamacare. The big difference with this one is it takes federal funds for Medicaid and hands them to the states to set up their own healthcare systems. The CBO says replacing Obamacare with this plan would leave millions more without insurance over the next decade. But it would also reduce the national deficit – how much more the gov spends vs what it brings in – by more than $130 billion. Republicans are trying to push the bill through the Senate this week. They can only afford to lose two GOP votes. And at least three GOP senators have said 'hard pass.' Unclear whether the CBO score will tip the scales.

What to say when you lose Monopoly...

No getting out of jail free. Yesterday, Anthony Weiner was sentenced to nearly two years in prison for sexting with a 15 year-old girl. Weiner's the former NY congressman who, back in 2011, sent that tweet. You know the one. That's why he's a former NY congressman. He's also the estranged husband of Huma Abedin, Hillary Clinton's right-hand woman. In 2013, Weiner attempted a political comeback by running for NYC mayor. But he was caught still having NSFW convos. That's why he's not NYC's mayor. He later sought treatment for sex addiction. Earlier this year, he said 'guilty' to this sexting incident. Now, he's moving into a prison cell and has to register as a sex offender.

What people are talking about…

Puerto Rico. The US territory is struggling to pick up the pieces after Hurricane Maria hit last week as a Category 4 storm. Power, cell service, and drinking water are in short supply. One of the island's dams is on the verge of collapse. Farms have been badly damaged, meaning Puerto Rico will have to rely even more on imports than it already does. All this will make the island's already crippling debt crisis even worse. Yesterday, Puerto Rico's governor urged the US gov to approve more aid asap. Here's how you can help.

What to say when most of the Starbursts are pink…

I feel special. Today, Alabama Republicans vote in a special election primary for Attorney General Jeff Sessions' senate seat. It's Roy Moore – a former state Supreme Court chief justice – vs Sen. Luther Strange (R-AL) – the man who's been keeping the office warm. President Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell back Big Luther, and Trump has been to 'Bama to campaign for him. But it's looking like voters favor Moore, a conservative Christian who tried to block same-sex marriage in Alabama...after it was legalized nationwide. Whoever wins faces off against the Dem candidate later this year.

What to say when you hear about this lady marine

Cardi B is charting a new path too.
