Skimm'd after a day OOO

  QUOTE OF THE DAY

"A fashion brand, a rooftop bar, an entertainment channel" – Air France's description of its new airline aimed at millennial customers. Desperate times call for desperate tag lines.

SLOW CLAP

The Story

Women will soon be allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia.

Excuse me?

Saudi Arabia is an extremely conservative country that follows a strict form of Islam. Women can't do things like travel or work without a male guardian signing off. They just got the right to vote, go to a stadium, and take gym class. And they've never been allowed to drive because, among other things, it apparently could 'harm their ovaries.'

What's changed?

Protests against the ban have shifted into high gear in recent years. Women have been getting behind the wheel and putting it on social media. Plus Saudi Arabia's crown prince is kinda sorta for equal rights. He thinks that actually letting women drive to work will help the economy, since they'll be able to get to work by themselves. Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.

Now what?

The country is putting together a task force to hash out how to implement this. Women will be allowed to head to the DMV by next June.

Saudi Arabia was the only country in the world where women couldn't legally drive. This change will not only improve the country's rep with human rights groups, it'll also give its economy a major boost. Win, meet women.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What to say when you finally decide what to order...

I choose you. Yesterday, Roy Moore – a former state Supreme Court chief justice – beat Sen. Luther Strange (R-AL) in an Alabama special election primary. Big Luther was backed by President Trump and the GOP establishment. Steve Bannon – the former White House chief strategist who exited last month – campaigned for Moore. Moore was removed from his elected state Supreme Court seat. Twice. The first time was because he wouldn't take down a Ten Commandments plaque he put up in the courtroom. The second was because he told Alabama judges not to allow same-sex marriage after it was legalized across the US. Moore will face off against the Dem candidate in December. In other news keeping the GOP up at night, Sen Bob Corker (R-TN) – the powerful two-term senator – announced he won't run for re-election.

What to say when your co-worker pays for your lunch...

Is this a bribe? Ten people – including four college basketball assistant coaches and a senior Adidas exec – were recently arrested on federal corruption charges. The coaches, from programs like Auburn University and Oklahoma State, allegedly accepted bribes from financial advisers and sports agents. In exchange, they convinced college athletes to work with these people once they went pro. In other cases, Adidas employees allegedly paid high school ballers to play at the schools the company sponsors. And to sign with the brand once they turned pro. The FBI has been looking into these bribes on the DL for years. And warn more people could get charged down the line.

What to say when your flaky friend cancels...

Surprise, surprise. Yesterday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) pulled the plug on the GOP's latest plan to repeal Obamacare. He was trying to hold a vote by Saturday. As with the previous times the GOP has tried it, Dems were not on board. And neither were enough Republicans. The GOPers in the 'no' camp all had different reasons – it either kept too much of Obamacare or rolled too much of it back. Not good for President Trump or GOP leaders, who have now tried and failed to overhaul Obamacare multiple times this year. Yesterday, McConnell said "we haven't given up." It wasn't over, it still isn't over.

What to say when no one responds to your Slack...

Feeling isolated. So is North Korea. Yesterday, the US put new sanctions on North Korean banks and people involved in the country's finance industry. This is all part of a bigger effort to squash the country's nuclear program by cutting off its financing. It comes after an especially tough week for US-NK relations, where the two sides have argued over whether President Trump declared war on the North. Casual.

What to say when you hear "Fixer Upper" is ending....

So is the Equifax CEO's time in the corner office.

What to say when your Twitter feed looks longer than usual...

The Kardashians are adding some new characters too.
