Skimm'd while getting intrigued by our new fave show

  QUOTE OF THE DAY

"Gratitude Glass Jar" – One of Oprah's new favorite things. Hers is always half full.

IT’S ALL SO TAXING

The Story

The GOP has a package.

What are you talking about?

Yesterday, House Republican lawmakers unwrapped their plan to overhaul the US tax code. If passed, this would be the biggest rewrite in more than 30 years.

What's in it?

There's a lot in the package. Some highlights are that it aims to cut the corporate tax rate from 35% to 20% – the goal being to make it more attractive to do business in the US. It cuts the number of individual income brackets. And it would phase out the estate tax, which takes a cut when property is transferred after someone's death.

What does this mean for me?

A lot of Americans would likely pay fewer taxes overall. Your 401(k) would stay the same. If you're thinking of buying a home, the deduction you'd get on your mortgage interest would take a hit. If you have student loans, that deduction you've been getting on your interest would go away altogether.

What's next?

Lawmakers huddle up and take a red pen to this draft. The GOP is aiming to finalize it and put it to a vote before Christmas. They could pass it without any Dems on board.

There are opinions. Republicans say this is a once-in-a-generation chance to clean up a really complicated tax code. Democrats say the fine print shows this is mostly a handout to corporations and wealthy Americans. TBD how much of this plan gets changed before the final vote.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What to say after rearranging the office...

Where's my chair? Yesterday, President Trump nominated Jerome Powell as the next Federal Reserve chairman. The Fed is in charge of keeping unemployment low and deciding how much it costs to borrow money. This is the first time in decades that a new president hasn't reappointed the current Fed chair. Now if Powell's confirmed, Fed Chair Janet Yellen will pass the torch when her term's up early next year. Meanwhile, people in DC are talking about former interim DNC chair Donna Brazile, who's accusing Hillary Clinton of unethically taking over the DNC's finances during the 2016 campaign. She says this led to an unfair Democratic primary face-off with Sen. Bernie Sanders (VT-I).

What people are talking about...

Kevin Spacey. Yesterday, eight current or former employees of Netflix's "House of Cards" said that Spacey repeatedly sexually harassed people on set. This comes days after former "Rent" actor Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of making a sexual advance on him back when Rapp was 14, and Spacey was 26. These new claims allege Spacey targeted young men on set and created a toxic work environment. Spacey apologized and is seeking treatment. And Netflix paused production on the next season of "House of Cards."

What to say in rush hour traffic…

This isn't going well. Yesterday, a Spanish judge threw a group of former Catalan politicians in jail. Last month, Catalonia – the northeastern region of Spain that includes Barcelona – voted to break ties with Spain. Spain said 'how 'bout no' and that the vote was unconstitutional. Last week, Catalonia officially declared independence. So Spain went ahead and took full control of the region. It sacked Catalonia's government and called for new elections. Now, it's investigating some of the former members of Catalonia's gov and could charge them with things like rebellion and misuse of public funds for staging the vote in the first place. Yesterday, thousands of people took to the streets in Barcelona to protest.

What to say to your journo friend…

Hear about this? Yesterday, the billionaire owner of DNAinfo and Gothamist shut down the sites. They were known for neighborhood reporting in cities like NYC, San Francisco, and Washington, DC. For years, local journalism has struggled to make any money. It also comes a week after the New York staff voted to unionize. The company said that was "simply another competitive obstacle" making it harder to do business. In other media brands having a rough day, "Teen Vogue" is going out of print. But don't worry, it'll still be on the Interwebs.

What to say when you give your two-weeks notice...

Going out with a bang. So is this guy.

What to say when you finally find that sweatshirt...

That's where it's been hiding.
