Skimm'd after a birthday trip

  QUOTE OF THE DAY

POLAND

The Story

This weekend, 60,000 people took part in a white nationalist march in Poland.

Back up. What's this about?

Poland's version of the Fourth of July was this weekend. In recent years, white nationalist groups have been hosting their own Independence Day march. They're calling for an ethnically pure Poland with fewer Jews, Muslims, and gay people. At first, only a few hundred people showed up.

And now?

In the last few years, it has attracted tens of thousands of people. Making it one of the largest nationalist marches in Europe. This weekend, protesters threw red smoke bombs and hung anti-Muslim banners that said things like "Pray for Islamic Holocaust."

Why is this happening?

White nationalists have been emboldened by things like the migrant and refugee crisis. In recent years, far-right, anti-immigration parties have picked up support around Europe, and especially in Poland.

The march in Poland this weekend isn't an isolated event. It's a symptom of a larger white nationalist issue across Europe and the West.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What to say when you're jet-lagged…

President Trump knows the feeling. He's wrapping up his 12-day Asia tour in the Philippines. Today, he met with President Rodrigo Duterte. US-Philippine relations have been frosty since Duterte was elected. That's because thousands of people have been killed in his bloody crackdown on the country's drug trade. Trump seemed willing to get back on good terms, and according to the White House, only briefly mentioned human rights issues during the meeting. Meanwhile the Philippine spokesman said the issue of human rights never came up. Hmmmm. Trump also had a chat with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier in the weekend. Trump says Putin told him again that Russia didn't interfere in last year's US election – and that Trump believes him. Which made a lot of people say 'huh?' And then Trump backtracked to say that he believes US intel agencies instead. He also had some words for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who he would NEVER call "short and fat."

What to say while re-watching Tiffany Haddish's SNL monologue…

Hi, Louis CK. On Friday, he apologized after five women accused him of sexual misconduct, including things like masturbating in front of them. He says "these stories are true," that he regrets them, and that he's "tried to learn" from his behavior. The film distributor for his new movie has canceled its release. Meanwhile, Roy Moore is not apologizing. He's the Republican Senate candidate in Alabama's special election next month. Last week, he was accused of sexual misconduct with a 14-year-old back in the '70s. He's denied these claims. But over the weekend, some Republicans suggested he step down. There were reports of possibly rescheduling the election, but Alabama's governor reportedly said it'll go as planned. Meanwhile, Gal Gadot – aka Wonder Woman– reportedly says she won't star in a sequel if producer Brett Ratner makes money off the movie. Ratner was accused of sexual misconduct by several women, including Olivia Munn and Ellen Page.

What people are watching…

Yemen. Millions of people there are closer to starvation after Saudi Arabia closed air, sea, and land ports along the border it shares with Yemen. Tensions between rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran have heated up in the last couple weeks. Among other things, Saudi Arabia says it shot down a missile that was fired from Yemen by Hezbollah – the Iranian-backed militant group. A few days ago, the Saudis responded by closing off all of Yemen's ports. Now, after lots of global backlash for the move, Saudi Arabia says it'll start reopening some air and seaports. Reminder: Yemen is in the middle of a civil war between pro-government forces and the Houthi rebel group. It's led to a humanitarian crisis, so disrupting resources there could make things worse. This comes as the country is also still reeling from one of the world's worst cholera outbreaks.

What to say when your friend has gossip…

Would Liz Smith want this scoop? Yesterday, Smith – a famous tabloid gossip columnist – passed away. She was 94. "The Dame of Dish" wrote for the New York Daily News and the New York Post, and her syndicated work appeared in over 60 newspapers. Oh, and she also won an Emmy during her 11 years at WNBC.

What people are watching…

Iraq and Iran. Yesterday, a 7.3 magnitude earthquake shook the Iraq-Iran border. State media report at least 300 people were killed. Crews are working to find missing people and clear the rubble from collapsed buildings.

What to say when your friend wants to do an early morning workout…

Venus and Jupiter are meeting up bright and early too.

BALLS

Ready, set, balls. The NFL season's in full swing and so are Sunday fundays. Here are some of the things that happened this weekend…

  • Winning streak...as in the New Orleans Saints have won seven games in a row after beating the Buffalo Bills yesterday. Spoiler: the Saints are at the top of their division, the NFC South, and have their eyes on the prize (aka a playoffs spot).

  • Comeback kids...as in the Pittsburgh Steelers came back big time to steel the game from the Indianapolis Colts. The Steelers are also at the top of their division, the AFC North.

  • First time's a charm…as in the San Francisco 49ers beat the New York Giants to win their first game of the season. Be sure to wear some flowers in your helmet.
