Skimm'd after stocking up on cranberry sauce

  QUOTE OF THE DAY

"He wasn't even sure he wanted to go on the yacht with Anne because the TV might not be working" – Anne Wojcicki's mom, who says A-Rod couldn't keep up with her CEO daughter. Celeb relationships, so relatable.

ANTI-TRUST FALL

The Story

The Justice Department is suing AT&T.

What is this about?

AT&T is trying to buy Time Warner. That's because AT&T doesn't just want to provide you Internet – it also wants to serve up the video content you're streaming. And Time Warner owns channels like HBO, CNN, and TNT. Earlier this month, there were reports that the DOJ wouldn't approve the deal unless AT&T dropped a major asset like DirecTV or Turner Broadcasting (which owns CNN).

Why's that?

The DOJ says this takeover would give AT&T too much power. And let it do things like charge competitors and customers way more for popular TV shows.

What does AT&T say?

That this lawsuit doesn't hold up. The company's CEO also addressed rumors that this may be President Trump's way of retaliating against CNN for what the prez calls unfair coverage. He said while he doesn't know what role CNN plays in all this, he's not surprised people are asking since it's a change in DOJ policy.

What's happening now?

The DOJ has sued to block the merger, saying it violates antitrust laws. AT&T says, 'we'll see you in court.'

This merger looked like it was good to go, since it combines companies from two different industries – something the US gov usually allows. Now, this could be one of the biggest antitrust cases in decades.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What people are talking about…

Charlie Rose. The legendary newsman was suspended from CBS after eight women accused him of sexual harassment. They say he did things like walk around naked and grope them – and one woman called him a "sexual predator." Rose apologized, and also said he doesn't think all of the allegations "are accurate." Meanwhile, the New York Times is suspending star reporter Glenn Thrush after multiple women accused him of things like making unwanted sexual advances. And a second woman came forward to accuse Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) of groping her. She says this happened back in 2010 – after he became Senator.

What to say when you're almost done with a book…

Coming to an end. The Trump administration is ending a program that let more than 50,000 Haitians live and work in the US after the country's 2010 earthquake. The 7.0 magnitude quake killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced over one million. The Obama admin allowed them to stay in the US while the country recovered. Now, the Trump admin says that Haiti is getting back on track. And is giving Haitians until next summer to move back home or get "lawful immigration status." In other immigration news, it looks like sanctuary cities will continue business as usual. Sanctuary cities: places like NYC, LA, SF, and Chicago that protect undocumented immigrants from deportation unless they've committed major crimes. Earlier this year, Trump signed an executive order to deny funding from these cities. Now, a federal judge is saying 'that's unconstitutional,' and has permanently blocked Trump's move.

What to say while mentally preparing for karaoke…

It's all about the pipes. Yesterday, Nebraska signed off on letting TransCanada build the Keystone XL pipeline – an extension of the Keystone pipeline that leaked last week. It's the last major step in starting the $8 billion project. The pipeline – which transports oil from Canada to Texas – has caused a lot of drama (think: lawsuits and protests) for nearly a decade. Supporters say it'll adds jobs in the US. Critics say it's bad for the environment, and interferes with Native American land. Now, Nebraska's saying 'we're good to go, as long as we change up the route.' Unclear if TransCanada is down with the route change.

What to say when dinner plans get revived…

Back on. Yesterday, President Trump added North Korea back on the list of state sponsors of terrorism. The honor comes with things like more sanctions. North Korea was on the list for 20 years until President George W Bush took it off in 2008 – hoping it would help talks to relax the country's nuke program. Spoiler: it didn't. Now the Trump admin is citing things like the deaths of Kim Jong Un's half brother and Otto Warmbier – the US citizen held captive in NK – as reasons why you're seeing it on the list again.

What to say after getting paired up for Secret Santa…

Uber and Volvo are pairing up too. Yesterday, Uber said it'll buy thousands of Volvo's self-driving cars starting in 2019. Now the company only has two years to perfect the car's technology. No pressure. This deal shows that automakers and ride-sharing companies are committing to self-driving cars for the future.
