Skimm'd while cleaning out our closets

  QUOTE OF THE DAY

"If you think I'm gonna spend 2 1/2 hours watching this cheesy lifetime movie about Harry and Meghan..." – A Twitter user who spent 2 1/2 hours watching the Lifetime movie "Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance."

JERUSALEM

The Story

Today the new US Embassy opens in Jerusalem.

Catch me up.

Jerusalem is home to some of the most sacred sites in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Israelis claim Jerusalem as their capital. Palestinians want East Jerusalem to be the capital of their future state. To avoid taking sides, the US has always had its embassy in Tel Aviv, and called for Jerusalem's status to be worked out during peace talks. Last year, Trump reversed decades of US policy and recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

There are opinions?

Obviously. The Trump admin says this will help move the peace process along. Supporters, including evangelicals and GOP donors, are glad to see Trump make good on a campaign promise and be unapologetically pro-Israel. Critics – including Arab and European allies – warn this could end the peace process for good. Palestinians say they won't participate in new peace talks with the US as a negotiator.

What now?

Protests have been going on in Gaza for weeks, and thousands of Palestinians showed up at the Israeli border today. The Israeli army – which is deploying extra troops there – shot and killed one person and injured dozens of others. Adding to the ominous background music is the fear that Israel and Iran may be inching towards an all-out war.

Today is rich in symbolism. The new embassy is opening as Israel celebrates 70 years as an independent state. And tomorrow, Palestinians remember that anniversary as their day of catastrophe.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What to say when you have a bad signal…

Say that again? Yesterday, President Trump said he's trying to save Chinese jobs. You read that right. Last year, ZTE – one of China's largest tech companies – settled with the US for violating sanctions on Iran and North Korea. But last month, the US called out the company for not fulfilling its end of the deal – and blocked American companies from selling phone parts to ZTE. The company has since announced it's shutting down its main operations – meaning thousands of jobs are in jeopardy. Now Trump's feeling sympathetic. He says he's working with China's prez to keep the company in business. People are scratching their heads over what this all means for the US and China, who've been on the verge of a trade war. And whether this friendlier approach has anything to do with the US prepping for its historic date with Chinese ally North Korea.

What to say when ordering brunch…

What won't get me sick? Dozens of people in the US have been hit with a recent Salmonella outbreak. Last month, a farm in Indiana recalled more than 200 million eggs. Since then, 35 people got sick, with 11 people hospitalized. Oh also, more than 100 people have suffered from an E. Coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce. And it's spreading. So eat wisely.

What to say when someone talks over you in a meeting…

Excusez-moi. Over the weekend, dozens of women in Hollywood protested gender inequality at the Cannes Film Festival. Since 1946, only 82 female-directed films have been up for prizes at Cannes...compared to more than 1,600 films directed by men. Also: only one woman has won the top prize. Now, the women – including this year's Cannes jury president Cate Blanchett, Kristen Stewart, and others – are saying we cannes do better. And demanding equal representation by 2020. Mais, oui.

What to say when your coworker makes a terrible joke…

You might want to say sorry. Same for that White House aide who made fun of Sen. John McCain (R-AZ)'s battle with brain cancer. The White House still hasn't publicly apologized.

What to say while rewatching "Back to the Future"…

Stephen Hawking's memorial service is open to time travelers.

What to say when someone tries to take your friend's seat...

It's saved – just like "Brooklyn Nine-Nine."

THING TO KNOW

Hanger Trick

A way to get rid of your old hang ups. As in, that shirt you haven't worn since college. Here's how it works: turn all your hangers around and only turn them back the right way after you wear the piece of clothing. After 6 months, the writing will be on the closet wall. Plus you'll be able to sleep easier when there's no pile of clothes on the bed. Want more ways to streamline your routine? Here you go.

SKIMM PICKS

For when you're thirsty in a long meeting…

For when you have a case of the Mondays…

Dance it off. One Skimm HQ'r is all about the soundtrack from "Overboard." Don't judge – it's catchy.
