OUT OF OFFICE

The Story

The Supremes are getting ready to pack their bags for summer break.

What are you talking about?

The Supreme Court's 2017-2018 term wraps up this week. It's been hearing cases since the fall. Now it owes us a few key updates. Here are the ones you'll be hearing about…

Travel ban……as in whether President Trump's ban on people from five Muslim-majority countries is constitutional. Some lower courts ruled it wasn't because it discriminates based on religion. The Trump admin says this is about national security. This is the third version of the ban the White House has tried to push through. And there have been hints that the justices may give it their blessing.

Union fees…as in whether gov workers need to pay union fees...even if they're not members. The plaintiff says people shouldn't have to cough up cash if a union doesn't align with their political views. Unions say that non-members benefit from things like collective bargaining, so they should have to pay up. If the court decides they can skip the fees, this would strike down a more than 40-year precedent and leave many unions worried about their future. Justice Neil Gorsuch could be the tie-breaker.

Abortion…as in whether crisis pregnancy centers have to let their clients know that the state offers free or low-cost abortions and birth control. Currently, this is required under California law. The centers – which usually have a religious affiliation and try to convince women to continue pregnancies or consider adoption – say this violates their freedom of speech. The justices are expected to strike down at least part of it.

The court's decisions can affect millions of people. Earlier this month, the justices said 'pass' or made narrow rulings on a handful of cases. By the end of this week, we should know whether they'll take a stand on these blockbusters.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

What to say when you do more than one push-up in a row…

I am so powerful. Yesterday, Turkish voters re-elected President Recep Tayyip Erdogan – giving him a ton of new presidential powers. This election was key, since it moved a lot of authority from the country's parliament to the presidency. Now, Erdogan has the power to do things like issue decrees, appoint key judges and officials, and possibly pull a few strings to control the country's economy. Wowza. The main opposition candidate said 'fine, you win' and warned that Turkey is headed toward 'one-man' rule.

What people are very much still talking about…

Immigration. Yesterday, President Trump said he wants to deport people who cross the border illegally without giving them a court hearing. Granted, this was on Twitter. But since Twitter is real life now, it could signal a policy shift. In the meantime, Trump's apparently been signing autographs on photos of people killed by undocumented immigrants. And the admin is continuing its "zero tolerance" policy that prosecutes any adults caught crossing the US-Mexico border illegally. But it's no longer separating kids from adults – which could pose a legal problem. The gov said it already reunited over 500 kids with their families. Only another 2,000ish more to go. If you want to help, here are a few options.

What to say when you hear the US Open is finally Open to new moms…

Kudos. Speaking of, the World Cup. Don't forget to congratulate your British friend over the team's bloody good win over Panama. Your German friend is a bit less embarrassed after that last-minute win over Sweden. You wish you were friends with Chicharito. And happy belated to Lionel Messi, who needs to stop crying for Argentina.

What to say when your mom has opinions on your look…

I am perfect and so is Zsa Zsa.

What to say when you know nothing…

Not anymore.
