I’ve spent the summer slowly transitioning out of sneakers being my go-to shoe. Which means I’ve been on the hunt for ballet flats that don’t read overly preppy or stuffy, but do have the comfort to last me for thousands of steps.
My newfound obsession…
I never expected that 2026 would be the year that I would fall in love with FitFlop, but now I have more than one pair. These leather ballerinas have on-trend ruched detailing, along with the brand’s supportive insoles.

This is the other pair of FitFlops I have that have caused people to stop me on the street to ask where they’re from. They’re a monochromatic, square-toe Mary Jane with an elastic strap. They look good with everything from denim to slacks, and I spent a whole weekend in NYC walking in them with no foot pain.
A pair of foldable flats that’ll fit in your bag…
I spent six weeks wearing this pair of Dream Pairs flats around Atlanta in scorching-hot temperatures and had not one complaint. They’re soft, bouncy, and flexible, and they curl right up to fit in the pouch they come with. Pack them on trips, keep them at your office desk, or stash them in your tote for commutes.
An updated take on a classic flat…
Sam Edelman is another brand that never lets me down. While I used to swear by their Felicia flats in high school, I like these Ruthie ones because they have the same cushioned insole, but they feel a little more fresh and grown up. Not to mention, the colorways are punchy, yet wearable.
A block heeled style that’s a designer dupe…
I’ve been eyeing the Repetto Camilles for months, but I’m not keen on the $470 price. These are nearly identical with their elasticated silhouette and comfortable block heel. PS: Go for these from Tony Bianco if you’re looking for an elasticated flat without a heel.
A flat mule that’ll always look good with jeans…
When in doubt, wear a mule with some thick denim. This Reformation pair has a square toe and comes in six on-trend, wearable colors. I also feel like these are a solid nighttime shoe option if you don’t want to wear heels (same).

I bought these Puma Speedcat Mules on a whim after seeing them at Anthropologie this summer, and I can’t stop reaching for them. They’re somewhere between a ballet flat, a mule, and a sneaker, which means they’re easy to wear in most situations. I throw them on for errands, and I’ve even paired them with dark-wash denim for nights out.
A style you can wash…
I’d go for Rothy’s if you’re truly wearing your shoes to the ground — whether you work on your feet or commute by foot often. On top of the soles being extra breathable and comfortable, they can be thrown in the wash. Just make sure to remove the insoles, and then toss both the shoes and the insoles in on a delicate cycle.
Another washable option from a celeb-approved brand…
Everyone from Anne Hathaway to Selena Gomez has been seen wearing shoes from Vivaia. This everyday style is a bestseller from the brand and has a square-toe with a V-cut silhouette. They’re made from recycled plastic bottles, and I’d also recommend washing these on a delicate cycle and letting them air-dry.
A budget-friendly pair if you’re new to wearing flats…
For those who want to test out the ballet flat trend, but don’t want to spend a ton, our editors will always turn to Old Navy. This $28 pair reminds me of the styles I’ve seen at Alohas but at a fraction of the cost. The buckle straps provide some extra edge, which means they’ll feel less preppy.
A glove flat from Madewell…
I love a glove flat because they’re slim, minimal, and pretty undetectable. They’re ideal if you’re looking for a flat shoe that’ll blend into a statement outfit.
