Pride Month

June 4, 2019

June is all about tasting, er, seeing the rainbow for Pride Month.

Pride Month: Rainbow Connection, A Guide To Pride

The Story

It’s Pride Month. And this year is especially significant because it’s the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, which launched the modern gay rights movement. So take some time to learn about the community’s history, celebrations around the world, and the terms to know.

The Timeline

For decades, LGBTQ+ people and allies have worked to help make sure the community is treated equally. We Skimm’d some of the major milestones that helped shape LGBTQ+ history.

Let your pride flag fly. We’ve got your Skimm on the history of the rainbow flag.

The Celebrations

Break out your most colorful clothes and pull out your calendar. Pride celebrations are going down all month – and year – long around the world, from NYC to London to Taipei. Here are some of the biggest parties, plus a look at some of the countries where there’s still work to be done on recognizing the LGBTQ+ community.

We also talked to Frankie Grande (yes, Ariana’s brother) about what pride means to him and how he’s celebrating this year. Here’s what he had to say.

The Terms

Biphobia. Cissexism. Pansexual. These are some of the many terms you should know, whether you identify as LGBTQ+ or are an ally of the community. We’ve got your Skimm on them and what they mean.

The Reads

Time to book it to the bookstore (or your Kindle). We’ve got some reads that’ll put you in the pride mindset.
