Skimm This: Intel. Sharing, Maternal Health, and Amazon Fires

August 22, 2019

It’s August 22nd. Today, we Skimm’d This:

  • South Korea pulled the plug today on sharing military intelligence with Japan after months of souring relations. They used to combine forces to keep a close eye on North Korea.

  • Planned Parenthood pulled out of Title X federal funding after the Trump administration changed the rules on which organizations are allowed to receive it. Clinics across the country are now trying to find ways to make up for the cash shortfall.

  • Environmentalists are seriously concerned about the 70,000+ wildfires that have been detected in the Amazon rainforest this year. And they’re pointing the finger at cattle ranchers.

  • Scientists at Washington State University say round numbers could be great marketing tools.

theSkimm: Today, South Korea said it will stop sharing military intelligence with Japan. We’ll look at the reasons why, and examine the possible fallout for the U.S. Then: Planned Parenthood pulled out of the Title X federal funding program, losing access to millions of dollars in. We’ll discuss why it’s no longer getting the funding, and what it means for patients. Also on today’s show: cattle ranchers are burning huge swathes of the Amazon to make way for animals, and why our brains find round numbers so satisfying.
