Maternity shopping isn’t all about the bump-friendly workwear and cute baby shower dresses. Chances are that as often as possible, you’ll be reaching for comfy basics like leggings, dresses, and tops that fit your changing body without making you feel too restricted. These pieces are a little boring, yes, but essential. From underwear and bras to tank tops and button-downs, here are some of our favorite pregnancy staples to stock up on.
Looking for more affordable, stylish clothes? Here’s what to wear when working, traveling, playing, and expecting.

For stretch factor and softness alone, we really love these underwear. They also don’t have any uncomfortable elastic bands that dig into your skin. You can wear them starting early in pregnancy, and they’ll continue to stretch with your growing bump—then be cozy during postpartum when high-waisted clothes can be extra-comfortable. ($38/3-pack, Bodily)

The over-belly look (and feel) isn’t for everyone, so if you’d prefer some underwear that take up a bit less real estate, these do the trick. They’re 95% cotton with a little spandex, and should work right up until the end of your pregnancy. (Unknown, Amazon)

We say this from experience. Tank tops that fit over your bump can even make it easier to keep using other tops and sweaters from your prematernity wardrobe, since anything with buttons can just be left open over them. And if you’re running hot, it’s always nice to have a light base layer. ($20.99/2-pack, Old Navy)

A great example of something you can wear day in and day out, during and after your pregnancy. Consider sizing up if you want to keep fully buttoning until the end of pregnancy, or wear your normal size and leave them open in the later months. ($54.99, Gap)($47+, Gap)

A great wardrobe staple for before, during, and after pregnancy, these Lululemon Align leggings might already be a go-to in your closet. While everyone’s different, you’ll likely be surprised how long these can last into pregnancy because of their extreme stretch (going up a size doesn’t hurt, either). ($98, Lululemon)

If prenatal workouts, runs, and yoga sessions are in your plans, grab a few pairs of workout leggings with lots of extra room for your bump. These have pockets and are almost always on sale—plus, they come in lots of different colors. ($11.47+, Old Navy)

Whether you wear leggings as pants, under dresses, or just around the house, Storq probably has something that’ll work for you. Their “signature” soft over-bump leggings come in black or charcoal—or you can try their slightly dressier, legging-like “city pant,” which comes in black or hazelnut. Both are available in sizes up to 4XL. ($74, Storq)($98, Storq)

This simple crew neck dress is 96% cotton with a little stretch, and comes in four colors and sizes up to XXL. Layer with a button-down, sweater, or denim jacket, or just wear it on its own for the easiest outfit there is.($9.47+, Old Navy)

When you want to basically stay in loungewear but look like you put in a little extra effort, this jumpsuit is a great thing to have around. It has a smocked bodice, with plenty of room for a growing bump underneath, and the fabric is soft and stretchy rather than tight. ($98, Ingrid + Isabel)

When you start to feel like your old bras (especially the ones with underwire) aren’t working for you anymore, make the jump straight to nursing bras—they tend to have a bit more stretch and less structure, and of course, they’ll be useful if you plan to breastfeed. We like this basic Kindred Bravely option, which comes in an impressively wide range of sizes. ($48, Kindred Bravely)

If you know you’ll be trying to breastfeed and want to go for quantity, these inexpensive bras do the job. They’re popular (with over 11,000 five-star ratings on Amazon), affordable (less than $10 per piece), and highly adjustable for max comfort. ($21.19, Amazon)
