How breast cancer awareness advocate Allyn Rose gets Up With theSkimm

October 16, 2019

The Story

In October, we wear pink. And once a month, Allyn Rose wears her #SelfExamGram tee. Allyn made history last year when she became the first model with a double mastectomy to be featured in Sports Illustrated. As Founder of Previor and spokeswoman for the AiRS Foundation, Allyn hopes to educate others on how to prevent breast cancer and make breast reconstructive surgery accessible for women after mastectomy.

What is the first step in breast cancer prevention?

Education. She told us why she decided to have a preventative double mastectomy at 26, shared her advice for women who are considering getting tested for the breast cancer gene mutations (BRCA1 and BRCA2), and walked us through options if you or someone you love tests positive for one or both of the gene mutations.

It's breast cancer awareness month, which means it’s time to get to know the risks and take action around breast and ovarian cancer.

PS: October 16th is National Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day, a day dedicated to building awareness around breast reconstruction options after Mastectomy.
