Whether you're rocking a full bush, a landing strip, or are bald down there, there's no right or wrong way to handle pubic hair. "It's a personal preference, based on what is comfortable for you," says Kristen Venuti, MD, OB-GYN at Northwestern Medical Group. But is one style healthier than another? Scroll down for Venuti's answer.
Venuti says there's no "healthier" option. But there may be some factors to consider...
If you have sensitive skin, waxing or shaving could be irritating or painful. If you want to keep it short, try trimming the hair with scissors or a trimming tool.
Waxing over time could help reduce the number of hair follicles, which can lower the risk of ingrown hair long-term, says Venuti.
Hair provides warmth and can reduce friction during sex (it’s easier to rub hair against hair than skin against skin), working as a “dry lubricant.”
“There is some data to suggest that pubic hair may reduce the risk of infection by keeping dirt and bacteria away from the vagina,” says Venuti. “Think of it as similar to hair on your head or arm hair, it’s the first line of defense for the skin underneath.” And if you decide to remove the pubic hair, Venuti says you’ll likely be fine if you have good hygiene, since the “vaginal microbiome is designed to protect the vagina.” Just make sure you avoid douching, scented soaps, or vaginal scent inserts.
