Fact Checker

Jordan Mamone is a fact-checker and unofficial copy editor at theSkimm. To underscore that, he confirmed that the title "fact-checker" needs a hyphen — but that the phrase "copy editor" does not. (So much for consistency. Thanks, Webster's.) But he's way more than just the punctuation police.

Using his eye for detail, sensitivity to bias, and knack for sizing up sources, Jordan ensures the accuracy of theSkimm's health, sports, and weekend newsletters. He also works on web features and calendar listings, plus he occasionally tackles the topical roundup that is The Daily Skimm.

Why does this matter? Well, it means someone carefully reread the lengthy perimenopause study that got condensed into a bullet point. And crunched all the numbers from a confusing set of WNBA statistics. And mentally went through a pasta recipe, then agreed it looked doable in only 30 minutes (OK, give or take).

In this age of instant information — when news feeds fuel agendas, social media is increasingly sketchy, and the internet itself can seem overwhelming (never mind the chaos and controversies of AI) — it's crucial to have an actual, and yes, somewhat fussy human being double-checking the data. Jordan makes sure nothing gets lost in translation. Call it a Skimmsurance policy (sorry, had to) for the trustworthiness of your weekly events summary.

Over the past decade or two, Jordan has professionally scrutinized everything from Time magazine's kids' edition to Martha Stewart's weddings division to Vogue fashion spreads to surreal Japanese TV shows. After hours, he's written about music and culture for outlets as varied as Vice, The Observer, Please Kill Me, New York Press, Time Out New York, and Elle.

A New York University grad who won the school's first-ever Edwin Diamond Award for journalism, Jordan is a long-standing resident of Manhattan’s Lower East Side. He spent a previous life there playing guitar in underground noise-rock bands. These days, however, he's an avid traveler and epicure, sharing an apartment with a brilliant redhead, a couple of cats, too many vinyl records, and a closetful of natural wine. He exists largely offline, but should you bump into him, feel free to ask about the most dramatic hiking trails in Cabo Verde or his favorite century-old butcher shop.
