From the Group Chat: Choupette Drama, Fake-Dating Your Costar, and Dua Lipa and Callum Turner

EDITOR’S NOTE

Happy Sunday. Now that it finally feels like June, I’m plotting my summer resolutions. A few at the top of the list?

  • Adding some Knicks merch to my wardrobe (No. 3 is already in my cart). Yes, I’m a bandwagon fan, yes, I’m having a blast, and yes, I think I need to attempt this hack for turning a jersey into a halter top.

  • Trying the unofficial mocktail of the summer. It only requires two ingredients, both of which you probably have in your fridge right now. I’ll be making mine with extra olives.

  • Expanding my pasta salad repertoire for some prime beach lunches. Kale Caesar pasta salad, where have you been all my life? (Serve with a frosty Diet Coke, of course.)

  • Pondering these summer office-outfit formulas. This is the hardest season for work clothes (solidarity with my fellow sweaty girls), but (a) I have a new job (hi, BTW) and (b) these are so good, I’m actually excited for my morning commute.

  • Stepping out in the comfiest footwear trend of the season: granny sandals — so much cooler than they sound. At least, me and my pink platform Tevas think so.

👀 Millennials, the shoe that’s been collecting dust in your closet since 2011 is back — and somehow, it’s chicer than ever.

🏖️ Whoever is responsible for giving this “bathing-suit pariah” a massive glow-up deserves a raise. Our middle-school selves are thrilled.

💅 No, you’re not experiencing déjà vu. This versatile, surprisingly subtle nail polish color is even more popular than last summer.

🛍️ Just when you thought you’d mastered white jeans (same), fashion people have already moved on to something better, which won’t have you melting by noon.

📕 Put down that steamy romance — the beach reads everyone will be talking about this summer arent what youd expect.

Quelle horreur. The “World’s Richest Cat” may actually be broke. Yes, we’re talking about Choupette, Karl Lagerfeld’s blue-cream Birman, who he called “the center of the world,” his “one great love,” and “kind of Greta Garbo.” For the uninitiated, here’s what the fluffball’s life was like with Daddy Karl — so extravagant, even Anna Wintour said she’d like to be reincarnated as the cat (Anna, get in line). The pair traveled via private jet (you can guess who got the best seat). She had two maids, responsible for entertaining her, grooming her, and keeping a diary of her every move. She ate chef-prepared meals off Goyard dishes on the table (naturally, she didn’t like eating on the floor). She was the subject of two books and graciously allowed Gisele Bündchen and Linda Evangelista to model alongside her. Oh, and it was widely rumored that Lagerfeld left a chunk of his fortune to her — something he confirmed to Numéro.

Except more than seven years after Lagerfeld’s death, the cat who famously said “non” to attending the Met Gala with a certain celeb has “received absolutely nothing,” according to her caretaker. Why the holdup? For starters, Choupette is a cat. But also, The Atlantic reports the estate has been embroiled in legal drama with French tax authorities and a mystery plaintiff who challenged the will. Now, while some breathless headlines may have you think otherwise, we assure you this isn’t an IRL version of The Aristocats. Choupette’s caretaker is Françoise Caçote, one of those two maids and the woman Lagerfeld reportedly picked to look after his life partner/cat, who, in a statement to the magazine, wrote that she works “part-time to support her” (relatable) and “to honor [Karl’s] wishes.” Safe to say, Lagerfeld would approve. We enter into evidence: Choupette’s 14th birthday celebrations, involving a boat, the Eiffel Tower, and champagne; one of her many vacations to Spain; and this glimpse at her beauty routine. Still, justice for Choupette.

Another press tour, another romance rumor cycle. Enter: Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein (we were surprised too), who had some fun fanning the flames while promoting their new rom-com. Case in point? JLo’s answer to this rather personal question and this video where they graded each other’s kissing abilities (Brett, right answer). But on Tuesday, the pair finally confirmed they weren’t a thing (Savannah Guthrie, we thank you for your service). Which wasn’t too shocking since they were never all that convincing — especially compared to Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, who truly committed to the bit, and Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson, who, honestly, we’re still not sure about. So let us present the new rules of fake-dating your costar. JLo and BGold, take notes.

  • Get matching tattoos. If platonic costars can do it, fake couples must too. Ideally, of each other’s faces.

  • Show up to your premiere in matching outfits à la Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake. Better yet, coordinate your every look for at least a month.

  • One up Neeson and Anderson’s blended family photo shoot by bringing both sets of your parents on the red carpet. If your moms meet, we’ll know you mean business.

  • Stage a full-on red carpet makeout session. Knock it off with the lingering glances — either go to town or leave us alone.

  • Abscond to Vegas and get legally married. That might actually convince us.

Congratulations to the new Mr. and Mrs. Dua Lipa. Last Sunday, the singer and Callum Turner tied the knot in London, and it was basically what we imagine Nick Parker and Elizabeth Jamess wedding looked like, bridal hat included. But if you thought they’d stop at The Most British Ceremony Ever™, not quite. Apparently, the newlyweds just wrapped a three-day wedding extravaganza in Sicily — quite fitting for the woman who invented vacationing. TBD when we’ll learn more about how these two throw a party, but here are a few predictions for what went down: After upending the wedding-gown industrial complex, we’re betting Lipa took on bridal shoes — with custom wedding flip-flops from the Row. Instead of matchbooks and merch, perhaps the couple gave out the book they were reading when they met. And, fingers crossed, Lipa walked down the aisle to an orchestral cover of “Levitating.” Probably not, but she should’ve, right?

If you’re still traumatized by the 1962 or 1991 version of Cape Fear, brace yourself: Apple TV just dropped a 10-episode series adaptation — and reviews are already calling it “a masterclass in tension.” Like the previous iterations, the scorched-earth tale of revenge is based on John D. MacDonald’s novel The Executioners. It follows Max Cady (played by an “immaculate” Javier Bardem), an exonerated murderer who becomes hell-bent on destroying the lives of the married lawyers (Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson) who put him behind bars 17 years earlier. But as Cady goes after the couple, their past comes back to haunt them. Sign us up for anything in which Amy Adams has a dark secret.
