Trump's Bro Trip to China
What’s going on: President Donald Trump is headed to China later this week, marking the first visit from a US president in nearly a decade. (You’ll never guess who it was last time.) On the agenda: ironing out a truce in the tariff war, finding an off-ramp in the Iran war, and smoothing out US-China business relations in the AI war. So, a light lift. Trump is bringing some bros for backup, including Elon Musk, Tim Cook, and execs from Goldman Sachs, Blackstone, and Meta.
What’s at stake: For years, economists have predicted a shift towards a world increasingly led by China. Trump has repeatedly threatened China’s economic growth with tariffs and sanctions, but China’s President Xi Jinping hasn’t blinked… or backed down. Case in point: Beijing recently nixed Meta’s $2 billion bid to take over a Chinese AI company. Add in the war on Iran, which is alienating US allies by creating chaos in the energy markets, and Xi suddenly seems to have more leverage in these one-on-one talks than he has in years past. Trump may have high hopes, but we can probably rule out a “big, fat hug.”

Healthcare
New Student Loan Limits Could Mean Fewer Nurses
What's going on: Thanks to new student loan caps set by the Trump administration’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, aspiring nurses and healthcare workers may need to find new ways to finance their dreams. The changes, which take effect on July 1, cut the maximum amount a nursing student can borrow to just $100K total. Teachers, social workers, and therapists are in the same boat. Meanwhile, other famously inexpensive degrees like medicine and law now have a $200K loan cap. Students who don't have cash on hand (so: all of us) will be forced to turn the private loan market… which means higher interest rates and fewer protections. Nearly half of all Americans (and 60% of Pell Grant recipients) won't even qualify for help. They didn’t cover this on The Pitt.
Don't worry, Trump has it all worked out: He and his administration say the caps will prevent students from taking on “insurmountable debt to finance degrees that do not pay off.” Many healthcare organizations disagree, and at least one is saying, “see you in court.” Critics worry the loan caps will further prevent many people, particularly women of color, from pursuing advanced degrees. It also exacerbates the current healthcare worker shortage, which has an outsized effect on rural communities. As one member of the American Hospital Association told Axios, “The healthcare workforce is not a faucet that you can turn on and off.”

Parenting
Beta Moms, Assemble
What's going on: Goodbye helicopter parenting, hello “Beta Moms.” These mothers don’t track their teens on Find My, spend every weekend at softball tournaments, or panic over a B+. And they definitely don’t spend hours gluing together a model of the solar system on a school night. After decades of pressure to do the absolute most, these moms are taking a Type B approach. They tell The Wall Street Journal they’ve never been happier — and their kids are alright.
Forget “having it all”: WSJ reports that beta moms’ ability to chill the F out may amount to a mini feminist rebellion. Contrary to what some men with podcasts think, data shows that working moms spend more time with their children than those from previous generations. Meanwhile, expectations have only grown: securing elite preschool spots, avoiding microplastics, mastering “gentle parenting,” and buying Montessori-approved toys. Beta Moms may be a byproduct of burnout. Some even wonder whether the extra labor is actually worth it. Amid rising costs, student debt, and an AI boom that's put historically “safe” careers on thin ice, not even a fancy private-school pedigree can guarantee future stability. Type B parenting won’t work for every child, but some families say the shift has made everyone calmer, happier, and far less resentful.
