A Shift in Tone

The Story

President Biden gave Israel an ultimatum over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

What do you mean?

In a phone call yesterday, Biden effectively left Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with a choice: Take new steps to protect civilians and aid workers in Gaza or risk losing future US support. Biden also called for an immediate cease-fire and a deal that would lead to the release of hostages. The call comes days after an Israeli strike killed seven aid workers from World Central Kitchen (WCK), drawing international condemnation. Now, it appears Israel is responding to Biden’s pressure.

Explain.

Hours after the phone call, Israel said it would open two more border crossings for aid to enter Gaza. But Israeli officials didn’t provide a timeline or say how much aid would be allowed in. Israel also reportedly said it would take measures to protect civilians and push for a temporary cease-fire in exchange for hostages. It's unclear if Israel's response will be enough for the US. In the meantime, Democrats praised Biden’s hard-line approach. That's as House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) said Biden's actions “undermine” Israel.

When women (obviously) deserve extra care…

During childbirth. Yesterday, a new study found one in eight people said they’ve been mistreated during childbirth. Researchers said its become a “regular occurrence,” with many respondents saying health care workers have ignored them, refused their requests for help, or failed to respond in a “timely manner.” Some providers also reportedly threatened to withhold certain care. The report found mistreatment increased in instances when the patient identified as LGBTQIA+, was unmarried, or had an unplanned C-section. Researchers said mistreatment can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder and affect a persons decision to have another child.

What's sending people mixed signals...

The job market. Yesterday, a new report found US companies cut over 90,000 jobs in March — the highest number since January 2023. Jobs in government, finance, and tech accounted for the largest number of layoffs, according to the report. The findings could add more anxiety among active job seekers and cast some confusion, especially since hiring is supposed to be solid. Today’s job report could provide greater insight on how the employment market is doing.

What’s not putting someone forward…

No Labels. Yesterday, the centrist political group said it’s letting go of its hopes and dreams of a “unity ticket” for the 2024 presidential election. Amid the rematch between President Biden and former President Trump, No Labels wanted to give voters a third option. But apparently nobody wanted to step forward and enter the race.
