Am I the Drama?

The Story

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) is looking to oust the House Speaker.

What for?

For working with Democrats to avoid a government shutdown at the 11th hour. Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) struggled to get the far-right House Freedom Caucus to back a temporary spending bill and anything he does in general. That includes when McCarthy fought to secure the House Speaker title earlier this year after four days of failed votes. To get their votes, McCarthy agreed to change the rules to allow only one lawmaker to bring forward a motion to give him the boot. Now, Gaetz is gearing up to oust McCarthy this week.

What's he saying?

Gaetz said McCarthy’s agreement with the Democrats was the “last straw” and said he plans to file a motion to vacate McCarthy this week. McCarthy said, “bring it on.” In order to pull this off, Gaetz needs 218 House members on his side. Gaetz might have to work with some Dems to make this happen — the same thing he judged McCarthy for. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) said she would “absolutely” vote to oust McCarthy. According to the rumor mill, names like Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) have floated around as potential replacements...if it even gets to that point.

McCarthy has been going back and forth with Gaetz and the House Freedom Caucus for months. Still, the infighting could reach a boiling point with the 2024 election just months away.

Who might be heading to court…

Former President Trump. Today, Trump is expected to appear in a Manhattan, NY, courtroom for his civil fraud trial. Last year, NY Attorney General Letitia James (D) accused Trump of inflating the value of his real estate holdings. James might move to call Trump to the witness stand. The judge presiding over the case has already taken away business certificates from the Trump Organization, Trump, and his sons. Now, James is looking to get Trump to pay $250 million in penalties. If the court sides against Trump, the judge could move to block Trump and his sons from doing any business in New York. He could also be forced to sell his properties in the state. The trial could run through the end of the year.

Who's heading to the Hill...

Laphonza Butler. Yesterday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) picked Butler, the president of Emily's List, to fill the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein's (D-CA) seat. Last week, Feinstein died at the age of 90 following months of health complications. She was the longest-serving woman senator ever. Lawmakers from both sides of the aisles commended Feinstein's service and her 31-year career. Now, Butler will be the third Black woman to serve as a senator. She will hold the seat until next year's election.

Who might be getting justice…

Tupac Shakur’s family. Last week, Las Vegas police arrested Duane Keith Davis, for the 1996 killing of the rapper. The case went unsolved for years, but then Davis spoke about his involvement in the murder in a 2019 memoir. He wrote he was in the front seat of the car that fired shots at Shakur. Now, after 27 years, police said Davis “ordered the death” of Shakur. His sister, Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, called the arrest a “pivotal moment.”
