Fan favorite 4moms MamaRoo baby swings were recalled.

That’s after reports that crawling babies got tangled up in the straps that hang below the seat. A 10-month-old died from asphyxiation and another 10-month-old ended up with bruises on his neck.

If you’re one of millions of parents who own the company's most popular product, then you need to add another product to your cart fast: this free fastener. It’ll tie back the straps to prevent your baby from getting trapped.

Here’s what else you need to know:

What specific swings and rockers were recalled?

The recall includes 2 million MamaRoo models that use a 3-point harness. They can be versions 1.0 - 4.0 with model numbers: 4M-005, 1026, and 1037. (Click here to see photos of the models that were recalled.)

Also recalled — 220,000 RockaRoo baby rockers with model number 4M-012.

PSA: The model number is on the bottom of the swing.

And if numbers make your head spin, here’s another clue: The recalled products were sold at BuyBuy Baby, Target, 4moms.com, and Amazon from Jan 2010 - Aug 2022.

And in case you’re wondering, models with a 5-point harness aren’t part of the recall.

Why is 4Moms issuing a recall?

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (the US gov agency that sets product safety standards) said there’s been one infant death reported in connection to the MamaRoo swing. The problem: When the swing or rocker isn’t on, the harness strap can hang below the seat, and crawling babies can get caught in the strap.

My baby swing or rocker is part of the recall. What should I do?

If your baby is crawling, stop using it and move it so your baby can’t reach it. You can then request a free strap fastener from 4Moms online (which will prevent the straps from extending under the seat when the swing is off). You’ll need to register your swing or rocker using the model number (again, that’s located at the bottom of the swing).

Have there been any other baby swing and rocker recalls?

Yes. The CPSC last year recalled Fisher-Price 4-in-1 Rock ‘n Glide Soothers after four infants died. Kids II Rocking Sleepers have been linked to five infant deaths. In 2019, Fisher-Price recalled about 4.7 million Rock ‘n Play Sleepers after 30 infants died. And thousands of Eddie Bauer Slumber and Soothe Rock rockers were also recalled in 2019.

The CPSC recently launched a campaign to remind parents that babies should never sleep on rockers. And this summer, a new rule went into effect that bans all products marketed for infant sleep that have more than a 10 degree incline (think: rockers, loungers, and bouncers).

A popular baby registry gift now comes with a serious warning. The 4moms MamaRoo swings and RockaRoo rockers are safe to use as they’re intended. But the restraint straps can be dangerous. No need to return the whole thing. Just make sure you get your free fastener for safety and peace of mind ASAP.
