Welcome to Skimm Tested, a series where we put viral products to the test and give you our honest, unfiltered reviews.

What I Tested…

  • RoseSkinCo. Lumi Device ($189)

Why I Tested…

why I tested the lumi laser hair removal device

How I Tested…

I used Lumi for five weeks, twice a week. I followed the instructions and upped the intensity of the laser over time, and made sure to moisturize after every session. I intend to keep using the device to finish out the full 12 week process.

Test Results…

  • Slowing of hair growth. I definitely noticed less hair on my legs after week three. The hair wasn’t totally gone, but in the past after I shaved, I would see stubble after two days. I noticed that it took the hair five or six days to start growing again. So a big win there. I also used the device on my underarms to stop regrowth after getting those areas professionally treated, and that worked very quickly.

  • Convenience. The entire experience is so quick and easy. Being able to do sessions in the privacy and comfort of my home is wonderful. Overall, the process took me about 10 minutes to do both legs and underarms. You plug the device in, select your desired intensity, and move around the body part you’re treating in small sections. Once done, I always lotion my legs.

  • Little to no pain. Since I got a few body parts professionally lasered, I’m used to the level of discomfort that comes with laser hair removal. That laser is much stronger, which makes sense because it’s used in a professional setting with nurse practitioners. The Lumi laser is IPL, so intense pulsed light. It’s weaker and therefore safer to use yourself. I barely felt any discomfort at all, even on the strongest setting.

  • Cost. The device itself isn’t cheap, but it’s way less money than buying a professional package, so if this fits your budget better, it’s a solid at-home option.

Sidenotes…

  • I felt comfortable using Lumi on my legs and underarms, but I’m hesitant to use it on really sensitive areas, like my face and bikini area. That’s more specific to my personal comfort level, because Lumi is safe to use on most areas minus above the cheekbones and near the labia.

  • Read the pamphlet before using! There’s lots of information to digest, and this isn’t a device to just wing. The pamphlet includes prep and aftercare instructions. I took the process very seriously because I wanted to see results as quickly as I could.

  • The device gets hot while you’re using it, so expect that. After unplugging it, I left it out to cool down before putting it away. I wish it came with a storage bag, because I just store it in a Ziploc.

  • Don’t expect full results until you’re at the 8-12 week point. You’ll start to see initial results, but be patient and realistic. Let me be clear — I am a big fan of professional laser hair removal, so this isn’t me knocking it. I just wanted to test an at-home alternative.
