It happens every year…suddenly it’s freezing out, and you’re realizing last year’s coat is a couple inches too short, or you never made that trip to the school Lost and Found to find the many hats that disappeared into the ether last winter. Here are 12 of our favorite options when it comes to replacing or upgrading your kids’ cold-weather gear — from parkas and snow pants to extra-warm outdoor socks.
Available in sizes 4-18, these kids’ coats from L.L.Bean offer different levels of warmth and coverage. The three-in-one option has a weather-resistant outer layer and inner fleece, which can be used together or separately, and the down jacket combines a water-resistant outer layer with water-repellant filling for lots of cold weather protection. For high-quality coats and ski wear with a little more whimsy, we love Boden’s brightly colored coats and eye-catchingly patterned gear. It’s not just about making a style statement — these will definitely help your kids stand out in the sea of single-shade parkas at school pickup or on the slopes. ($85+, Boden)($36+, Boden)
Getting the kids bundled up to go outside is always a big effort — and if you live someplace that gets consistent snowfall and cold weather, this full-body suit can make it just a bit easier. It’s a coat and snow pants in just one piece, and comes in infant and toddler sizes from 6-12 months to 4T. Hidden cuffs expand to help the entire suit fit longer, and you can choose from pretty purple, blue, and pink colorways. ($99, L.L.Bean)
For bigger kids (sizes 4-18), these overall-style pants are a great pick. Their elastic waist and adjustable straps make them more likely to last longer than just a year, and they’ll always make excellent hand-me-downs. Choose from black, light blue, red, navy, and green. ($89, L.L.Bean)
They’re not big enough to be running around in the snow just yet, but that doesn’t mean they should miss out on all the fun. Wrap your baby up in this water-resistant puffy suit, complete with hood, mittens, and (in smaller sizes) booties. The inside is plush, and it’s easy to machine wash when necessary. ($44.99, Old Navy)
And anyone trying to keep track of kids’ outdoor accessories can attest, that’s important. These mittens have especially long cuffs designed to keep them snug (and keep snow and ice out). They’re waterproof, and come in 11 different colors. ($19.50, Amazon)
Where do all the winter hats go every year? It’s a great question, but while you’re looking for them, throw a couple of these into your cart so you’re prepared. They’re frequently on sale, and come in both cute patterns and classic neutrals. ($14.99, Old Navy)($14.99, Old Navy)
Whether they’re for playing in the snow or just trekking to school and activities, snow boots are a must if you get regular bad weather. These unisex boots come in 23 different color combos, rise to mid-calf height, and have a strong rubber sole. They also cinch closed at the top for maximum warmth. ($42.47, Amazon)
Baby mittens, socks, and hats are notoriously hard to keep track of — or just keep on at all. These unisex fleece booties are easy to fasten in place around the ankle, making it less likely they’ll slip off in the stroller (although we can’t promise you won’t still lose them in the wash). Pick from tons of colors, including lots of cute two-tone options. ($22.00, Amazon)
For kids in toddler sizes 11-13 or youth sizes 1-5, these adorable sherpa-lined booties are the perfect lounge slipper. They’re cushioned, with grips on the bottom, and come in four different wintry colors. Best of all, you can machine wash and dry them, too. ($35, Bombas)
These cushioned socks are made of 63% merino wool, and designed to keep kids warm whether they’re skiing, sledding, or just making snow angels in the yard. Since they go over the calf, there’s no danger of them slipping down inside boots like regular socks. ($21, Smartwool)
Not what you’ll reach for when the kids are planning an epic snowball fight — but perfect for any winter special occasions, holiday-related or not. Janie and Jack’s beautifully made dresses and sweaters are some of our favorites for kids year after year. Keep an eye out for the chance to stock up during a sale.
