Hispanic Heritage Month starts
The next few weeks are about recognizing Hispanic and Latinx Americans' contributions to US culture and history. This heritage month first started in 1968 as a week-long event. But in 1988, President Ronald Reagan extended it to a month. Fun fact: The celebration starts in mid-September to coincide with independence days of several Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua (all on Sept. 15), Mexico (on Sept. 16), Chile (on Sept. 18), and Belize (Sept. 21).
