Indigenous Peoples' Day
Or what you might see on other calendars as Columbus Day. Here's why...
β Elementary school throwback: Christopher Columbus was the Italian explorer credited with discovering the Americas in 1492. Actually, there were millions of people already living in America. His arrival kicked off an era of European colonization. Resulting in centuries of displacement and violence against Indigenous people.
β In the 20th century, Columbus Day began as a way to celebrate Italian-American heritage. But as people become more aware of his legacy, things have started to change. Around a dozen states now recognize today as Indigenous Peoples' Day. But the federal holiday is still called Columbus Day.
