The bright but brief peak of the Quadrantid meteor shower happens overnight into Jan 4 — and it’s one of the year’s most intense displays. See it best in the hours before dawn, assuming skies are clear and dark. The peak window is short, though, so patience (and a clear eastern horizon) pays off.

The 31st Critics' Choice Awards honor the year’s top film and TV work, with Chelsea Handler hosting. “Sinners” leads the film nominations, followed by “One Battle After Another” — both early contenders for the Best Picture Oscar.
