While the Skin Cancer Foundation advises applying a nickel-sized dollop of SPF to your entire face, did you know you can also add to that base with makeup? It turns out that tons of brands are now formulating products with SPF so you can maximize your coverage. We’re covering eight makeup brands with SPF that doesn’t feel sticky, too heavy, or cause a whitecast. Let’s get to it…
Ciele
Founded by celebrity makeup artist Nikki DeRoest, Ciele Cosmetics is a modern makeup brand with every product (yes, even concealer) containing sun protection. The brand first came onto my radar thanks to Abbey Yung’s rave review on its Tint & Protect, an SPF 50 skin tint with buildable coverage. I’m currently eyeing these powder blushes that have SPF 45.
Ultra Violette
Last summer was really the summer that Australian SPF brand Ultra Violette blew up in the States. While I personally love Future Screen, a mineral-based sunscreen with a bronzed, glowy finish, Sequin Supreme is a moisturizer, makeup primer, and sunscreen in one. That said, I’d highly recommend the brand’s Preen Screen. It’s a fine mist facial spray with SPF 50 that’ll make reapplying sunscreen over makeup nearly effortless. Don’t forget to add this dusky pink lip protector to your cart, too.
Colorescience
I tested Colorescience’s cult-favorite, color-changing facial sunscreen a couple of years ago, and have been a longtime fan of the brand ever since. The Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield Flex comes in six adaptable shades that’ll blend and adjust to your skin tone. If you’re looking for a solid option to reapply over makeup, I’d go for the brush-on powder version. I also love this tinted undereye serum for no-makeup days when I only want a tiny bit of coverage.
Prequel
While Prequel’s sole focus isn’t SPF, I felt like it was important to call out the brand’s Lip Visor. It’s the only SPF lip product I’ve tried that doesn’t taste like sunscreen, and the brand just launched four new shades. Pick from clear and tinted versions, all of which have SPF 30. The color payoff on these is stunning.
Naked Sundays
Our editors love bronzing drops as a lightweight way to make your skin look sunkissed. These drops from Naked Sundays have SPF 50 and a watery texture. You can apply them with your fingertips or with a makeup sponge. Don’t forget the brand’s celebrity-approved tinted moisturizer, too. You can build it up to have the same level of coverage as a foundation; makeup artists have used it for red carpets and TV appearances.
Supergoop
Supergoop is a tried-and-true SPF brand for me, and I buy the Every Single Face Watery Lotion on repeat. That said, the brand has tons of makeup-friendly options, including this SPF-packed highlighter stick, the classic Glowscreen primer (which you can wear underneath makeup or on its own), and these new lipglosses with SPF 40.
Laura Mercier
Tinted moisturizer wouldn’t be what it is without Laura Mercier. There are so many versions and finishes, including Blurred Matte, Natural Dewy, and now Blush and Bronzer options (note: these don’t have SPF). I love this one because there are so many different shades and it’s a no-frills makeup product that looks great no matter your skin type.
Ilia
Ilia’s Super Serum Skin Tint is another hero SPF product that I won’t stop recommending. It differs from other tinted SPF products in that it really does have the texture of a serum, but with the color-correcting coverage of light-to-medium concealer. It has SPF 40 and comes in 30 shades. The brand also just launched this Sun Serum Mineral Sunscreen. It has SPF 50 and can be worn as a hydrating base with sun protection. I’d personally wear it underneath the Super Serum Skin Tint.
