Cecily Strong spent a decade on Saturday Night Live, where she co-anchored “Weekend Update” and blessed us with “The Girl You Wish You Hadn’t Started a Conversation With at a Party.” Now, the Schmigadoon! star is a new mom, a Midwesterner for life, and extremely confident about what she puts on her English muffin.
In our new series, We Needed This, we name the things we want more of and ask our guests to weigh in. Here’s what Strong had to say about…
Cecily Strong: Anne Hathaway. Gorgeous. And that's exactly how I looked pregnant, which is wild.
Genevieve Cifelli: Cecily Strong. We needed this: more love for Chicago.
CS: Always more love for Chicago. J.Lo has told me I will never be a New Yorker, so I'm a Midwesterner forever.
GC: We needed this: more women in their 40s having babies.
CS: Yes, I'm very proud of the fact that we are all in our 40s and choosing to start our motherhood journeys here.
GC: We needed this: more women in comedy.
CS: I think women are just funny naturally and have been told they aren't. The men think they're funny because women laugh a lot because we have better senses of humor.
GC: What SNL skit or character made you break the most?
CS: This “Reality Stars” sketch with Will Ferrell. We both had our faces pulled back, and he's holding this real dog that didn't move much. I was laughing the entire time but my face was so pulled you couldn't really tell.
GC: Who was your favorite SNL guest star?
CS: Reese Witherspoon — I felt like we were best friends. And Amy Adams, and Matt Damon, and everyone who hosted.
GC: We needed this: a Difficult People reunion.
CS: I needed that. Julie and Billy are so funny. I'm so excited to just be in that room.
GC: What's something that recently made you say, “We needed this”?
CS: I'm partnering with Thomas' English Muffins. We are doing a Join the Morning People campaign. Breakfast is good. I am an English-muffin-with-cottage-cheese person.
GC: And were you onto the cottage cheese before TikTok popularized it?
CS: My mother got me onto cottage cheese. My mom and I are both 150 years old. We were both born in the 1800s and we have been on cottage cheese.
GC: Cecily, I think we needed this.
CS: We needed this. I needed this.
