Whether you’re moving somewhere new, renovating, or just trying to make your place work better for you, (re)decorating can be daunting.

So to help you make your house a home — and keep it that way — we’re breaking down three tips that can help you design your perfect space.

• Teach Facebook Marketplace how to find things that fit your style.

Marketplace has everything from unique finds to work by local craftspeople to gently used (and less expensive) well-known brands, but sorting through the good and not-so-good can be overwhelming. And while *the algorithm* gets a lot of bad press, when it comes to home decor its power can be harnessed for good.

Searching for the design styles, specific item names, and brands you like can help train Marketplace to show you pieces you’ll love, without all the digital digging. This video from interior design YouTuber Caroline Winkler has tips for figuring out what you’re looking for, then training your algorithm to find it for you. Happy hunting.

• Stick to basics for bigger pieces.

Staples like couches or large appliances usually come with a higher price tag. And as much as we love our spaces now, chances are they’ll need a refresh someday.

To keep your pieces timeless, choose basics for larger pieces and let the accents take center stage. Skip the wavy headboard and go for a more conventional shape with some wavy-patterned bedding. Opt for a neutral-colored couch, and add fun throw pillows and blankets. Choosing classic shapes and colors means your bigger items are less likely to go out of style. Plus, when the time comes, the smaller ones will be way easier — and cheaper — to swap out.

• Lean into your natural drop zones.

Creating aspirational organizational systems can make maintaining your space an uphill battle. Instead, try using designated drop zones to help corral the clutter and make your space work best for you (and your cohabitants).

Not sure where to start? Look around for piles of stuff — these are your natural drop zones. Then, find storage solutions that both look good and work well. Always dropping coats by the door? Hang some chic hooks. Throw your keys and wallet on the entry table every evening? Add a catch-all tray. Your clutter will stay confined to specific spaces, and giving everything a home means you’ll always know where to find things when you need them. PS: We found some inspo and options for you.
