What is “functional freeze”?

Answer: A stress response where you appear productive, but feel mentally stuck. 

If you’re staring at your laptop, scrolling TikTok instead, or feeling “tired and wired,” you may recognize a functional freeze. While it’s not an official psychological diagnosis, the term is commonly used by therapists and mental-health educators to describe what happens when chronic stress keeps your nervous system stuck in survival mode.

If you’re constantly procrastinating, avoiding basic life admin, or feeling frozen despite being busy, it can be a sign something’s off, and that rest, support, or a reset is what you need.
