The Story

Americans under 55 are getting cancer at higher rates.

What’s going on?

Yesterday, the American Cancer Society revealed there's been a rise in colorectal cancer cases. In the late '90s, colorectal cancer was the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women under 50. Now, it’s the first for men and second for women. Experts aren’t sure what’s causing the increase, but some have pointed to a sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy diet. Meanwhile, researchers have also found a rise in diagnoses for some common cancers. Between 2015-2019, researchers tracked about a 1% increase each year in uterine, breast, and pancreatic cancers.

Any good news?

Yes, actually. People with cancer are living longer and dying less often. That’s due in part to better treatments and earlier detection. The five-year survival rate for all cancers combined has gone up about 20% since the ‘70s. Still, experts say the rise in cancer diagnoses highlights the need for things like earlier screenings. For colon and rectal cancers, doctors recommend screens at age 45 — down from the previous rec at 50. In some cases where colorectal cancer is present in family history, doctors recommend getting screened as early as age 40.

The American Cancer Society projects there will be 2 million new cases of cancer in the US this year — which comes out to more than 5,000 diagnoses per day. Now, amid the rise in cancer cases among younger adults, many point to the need for new investments in prevention efforts.

Who’s back on the list…

Yemen’s Houthis. Yesterday, the State Department said it’s putting the Iranian-backed Houthis back on the global terrorist list. During the Trump admin, the Houthis were labeled a global and foreign terrorist organization. But in 2021, the Biden admin removed the labels in order to allow humanitarian aid into Yemen. Now, amid the Houthis’ ongoing attacks in the Red Sea, the Biden admin is sticking the global terrorist label back on. The designation allows humanitarian aid to still enter Yemen and aims to restrict the Houthis' financial backing. The State Department's announcement came the same day the US military launched its fourth round of strikes against the Houthis in Yemen. Meanwhile, the Iranian-backed group has said it has no intentions of stopping its attacks in the Red Sea.

…Oh and speaking of strikes, Pakistan carried out retaliatory strikes inside Iran early this morning, reportedly killing several people. The strikes come amid rising tensions between both countries. Earlier this week, Iran struck Pakistan, killing at least two children.

Where there’s outrage…

Elyria, Ohio. Earlier this week, Elyria police released bodycam footage after a woman alleged they raided the wrong home and injured her 17-month-old son who was on a ventilator. Officers served a warrant for stolen guns last week, raiding a home with flash-bangs, which are diversion devices that make a loud bang. Courtney Price alleges her son had to be hospitalized and was diagnosed with “chemical pneumonitis” because of the flash-bangs. Elyria’s mayor has asked for an outside investigation into the incident. Authorities maintain Price's child was not harmed and called her allegations “not true.”

Who people are sending well wishes to…

Princess Kate. Yesterday, Kensington Palace announced she received abdominal surgery and will be staying in the hospital for up to two weeks. No other details were given, but they said it’s not cancer-related.
